Why do we celebrate Bhai Dooj?

Bhai Dooj Festival is celebrated by brothers and sisters to strengthen their love bond.

Regarding the origin of this festival, it is believed that Lord Krishna after killing the demon Narkasur went to his sister Subhadra. Subhadra welcomed Lord Sri Krishna with flowers and sweets and applied frontal mark on his forehead.

The festival is observed on the second day after Diwali and is celebrated by Hindus all over India but primarily in Northern India.

The festival is known as Bhai Phota in Bengal; Bhai Bij, Bhau-beej or Bhav Bij in Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka. In Nepal it is called Bhai Tika. The other names of Bhai Dooj are Bhai Tika, Bhatri Ditya, Bhathru Dwithiya and Bhai Dooj.

The brothers are invited by their sisters on this day. The sisters wake up and prepare delicious food early in the morning. They apply vermilion on their brother’s forehead and performs arti. They pray for happiness, long life and well being of their brothers.
