Why do we celebrate Buddha Purnima?

Buddha Purnima or Buddha Jayanti is celebrated to honor Lord Buddha. He originated the Buddhist religion. Lord Buddha was born in 563 BC at Lumbini, Nepal.

It is held in the month of April or May. He attained enlightenment in Bodh Gaya, Bihar and Nirvana in Kushinagara on the same day. He gave his first sermon at Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh in India. The day is celebrated at all these places and in other parts of the world.

Buddhist recite scriptures, meditation, sermons, prayers, wear white clothes and other important religious activities are performed by the Buddhists. Candles, fruits and flowers are offered to statues of Buddha.
