Why do we celebrate Elephant Festival?

According to the Hindu Mythology when Gods and demons were engaged in stirring the ocean, Gods were lucky to receive an elephant named “Airavata”. The elephant later became the spiritual leader of Indra. Since then Elephant festivals are celebrated by Indian as well as by foreign tourists.

Elephant Festival is celebrated in the month of March, on the day when Holi festival is celebrated. The festival takes place annually in Jaipur, Rajasthan in India.

On this day people gather at Chagan Stadium to witness the decorated elephants. The elephants present tug-of-war, polo matches and races and from them the best decorated elephant is chosen.
