Why do we celebrate Folkmoot?

The Folkmoot is a celebration of the folk music and dance through world’s cultural heritage. It first began in Waynesville, North Carolina and surrounding communities in 1984. It is a two week festival that occurs in mid to late July. The Official International Festival is held in the mountains of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Waynesville, North Carolina in the United State and neighboring territories.

Folkmoot features a Parade of Nations, workshops, market, food vendors, a special children’s program and performances by approximately 350 folk dancers and musicians from ten to twelve countries. Many of the events take place in the nearby towns of Waynesville and Asheville.
