Why do we celebrate Ganga Dussehra?

Ganga Dussehra is celebrated to commemorate the birthday of Divine River Ganga or Ganges to the earth. It falls in the month of June or occasionally in May.

It is celebrated in those areas where the river Ganges flows particularly by people of Uttar Pradesh, Bengal and Bihar. The Ganga River is known as “Tripathaga” or the “Three Path River” as it flows in three worlds.

It is believed that Ganga was brought to the planet by Kingh Bhagirath by the severe penance. Therefore, it is also known as Bhagirathi. The Ganga is the largest of all Indian rivers. Dashahara are the first ten days of the month Jyeshtha that are devoted to honor the river Ganges. It is believed that one acquire salvation from ten sins if one worship on this day and take a holy bath.
