Why do we celebrate Guru Gobind Singh Ji Jayanti?

Guru Gobind Singh Ji Jayanti is celebrated to commemorate the birthday of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. He was the tenth Guru of Sikhs who was born on 22nd December, 1666 in Patna, Bihar in India.

According to Nanakshahi Calendar, the birthday of Guru Gobind Singh Ji falls onĀ 5th Jan every year. However, as per the Hindu Vikram Calendar, it may sometimes fall in December or January or seldom occurs twice in a year. The birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh Ji is celebrated by all Sikh community.

Sikh people visit Gurudwaras on this day to pay obeisance. They lighten earthen lamps and candles at home as well as in Gurudwaras. On this occasion some people fire crackers.
