Why do we celebrate Independence Day?

The Independence Day of India is celebrated to remember the day when India got freedom from the bondage of British rule on 15th August, 1947.

Each year it is held on 15th August all over India. On this day tributes are paid to those who sacrificed their lives for the attainment of freedom. Numerous cultural programs are performed and the day is commenced by hosting of National flag.

The main event is organized at the Red Fort in Delhi with a salutation of 21 guns where the Prime Minister of India hoists the flag. After that he delivers a speech to the entire nation.
