Why do we celebrate Ka Pomblang Nongkrem?

Ka Pomblang Nongkrem or Shad Nongkrem is celebrated as a thanksgiving to the Goddess Ka Blei Synshar for a plentiful harvest and prosperity of the people.

The five day long festival is observed annually in the month of November at Smit, Khyrem Syiemship capital near Shillong in India.

One of the important rituals that are performed on this day is the Pomblang ceremony. The goats are sacrificed and are offered to the administrative head of the Khasi state, the ancestors of the ruling clan and to the Shillong peak deity are known as U-Lei Shillong.

The festival is inaugurated by the eldest sister of the King, Syeim Sad who acts as the head priest of the event. Dressed in traditional splendor Khasi men and women perform dance of Nongkrem. At dawn an opening or royal dance takes place. On the last day Syiem is offered as a thanks prayer to the Creator.
