Why do we celebrate May Day?

1st May is celebrated as International Labor Day and also as spring festival to honor Goddess Spring throughout India. It is celebrated in Gujarat as Gujarat Day and in Maharashtra as Maharashtra Day. On 1st May 1960, both attained statehood under the Saurashtra re-organization act, when Bombay now Mumbai was divided into two. On the basis of Marathi and Gujarati, two distinct languages the division was made.

May Day

There is a national holiday in many countries including India to celebrate this day. It is also the day of rallies and protests. On this day numerous institutions of labor organize children competitions that belong to the labor class and processions are carried out.
