Why do we celebrate Shivaji Jayanti?

Shivaji Jayanti commemorates the birthday of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He was born on 19th February 1627 in Shivneri Fort which is 60 km North from Pune. He created the Maratha Empire.

His birthday is celebrated on 19th February mostly by Maharashtra people. Shivaji was a brave military leader who took trainings from commanders like Baji Pasalkar and Gomaji Naik. He was rewarded as Chatrapati in 1674 and hence came to be known as Chatrapati Shivaji.

On this day people dress up like Shivaji and his associates and take part in procession. They perform a small skit all the way.
