Why do we celebrate Surdas Jayanti?

Surdas Jayanti is celebrated in memory of birthday of Surdas all over India. There is no definite date regarding the birthday of Surdas. It is believed that he was born on 1478 or 1479 AD.

He was a blind saint and poet who sang about childhood life of Lord Krishna. He discovered Sursager which is a holy book containing melodious collection of poetry. He remained celibate and devoted his life singing devotional songs in praise of Lord Krishna in Vrindavan.

The event is celebrated in the month of May or June. Surdas Jayanti is celebrated by great pomp and show in Vrindavan and Braj.

The composed songs of Surdas are sung. Discourses and seminars are conducted on the preaching and life of Surdas.
