Why do we celebrate Teej?

Teej or Haritalika Teej is a festival dedicated to the sacred couple- Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. As per legend, after several penance Goddess Parvati was united with Lord Shiva. It is the swing and rain festival. It is also a festival of fasting for Hindu women.

A three day festival is occasionally celebrated in Bhadrapada or Bhadoin month of Hindu that is in July, August or early September. Teej festival is celebrated with great charm in Jaipur and in most parts of India and abroad.

Goddess Parvati who is the symbol of devotion, fertility and virtue is worshipped on this day. Prayers are performed by the married women for the well being of their husbands. On this day married women and girls apply henna on their hands and wear the best dress. The married girls’ parents deliver sweets, gifts and clothes to them. They enjoy rope swing and sing songs.
