The festival is organized in the month of October or November. The festival is celebrated generally in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Jharkhand and mostly everywhere in India.

The four day festival rituals are rigid and include holy bathing, fasting and abstaining from drinking water and standing in water for long periods of time. To the setting and rising sun the prasad and aragh are offered.

According to Hindu mythology it is believed that worshiping Sun will bring prosperity and well being of the family members, elders and friends as well as cure various diseases such as leprosy.
