Why do we celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi?

Ganesh Chaturthi or Vinayaga Chaturthi is the festival of Hindus celebrated as the birthday of Lord Ganesha. He is son of Lord Shiva and Parvati and brother of Kartikeya according to the mythology.

The date occurs generally between 20th August and 22nd September and is celebrated in all parts of the country and abroad. He is the prosperity and wisdom God.

Before the commencement of the festival people clean their house and worship place is decorated with lots of flowers and lightings. People bring the idol of Lord Ganesha to their home and it is worshipped for ten days. On the day eleventh the idol is taken out in the streets in procession and people sing, dance throughout the way to river or sea where the statue is immersed.

The Modak is the primary dish prepared on this day by frying or steam cooked. It is prepared from rice or wheat flour with a stuffing of dry-grated coconut, dry fruits, jaggery, and some other seasoning.

Other prominent dish called Karanji is prepared which tastes similar to modak but its shape is semicircular.
