Why do we celebrate Mahavir Jayanti?

Mahavir Jayanti is celebrated to remember the birthday of Lord Mahavira also known as Vardhamana. He was born in 599 B.C at Kshatriyakund in Bihar. He was the creator of Jainism religion and the follower of peace.

It is celebrated in the month of March by Jain community. Mahavir taught his followers’ salvation, non violence and inhibited killing. He began five fold paths which are as follows:

1 Ahimsa which means using Non-violence without using any form of violence to harm others.
2 Asteya means not to steal.
3 Brahmacharya indicates temperance in sexual pleasures.
4 Aparigraha meaning non-acquisition of property.

On this day numerous Jains in the name of Mahavira do charity. While others go to temples to meditate and pray.
