Why do we celebrate Onam?

Onam is a festival of harvest and is celebrated to honor legendary King Maveli’s homecoming. It is said that during Onam his spirit visit Kerala.

The festival occurs during the Malayalam calendar’s first month of Chingam that is in the month of August or September. The festival is celebrated in Kerala State in India.

The festival is ten day long and people welcome their king by putting flower mats in front of their houses. Laying of flower mats competition takes place during the festival. People wear new dresses. The other highlights of the festival are:

1. Snake Boat Races
2. Puli Kali
3. Kaikottikkali dance
4. Elaborate banquet lunch
5. Preparation of Onasadya
