Why do we celebrate Mahatma Gandhi’s Assassination Day?

Mahatma Gandhi or Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse on 30th January 1948. It is also observed as Martyr’s Day.

There were five unsuccessful attempts made previously to kill Mahatma Gandhi. But the last attempt proved successful when on 30th January 1948 Mahatma Gandhi was going to attend a prayer meeting. Nathuram Godse who was chasing him gracefully bowed and then shot three times at him with a 38 Beretta semi-automatic pistol. On this day he was assassinated.

Gandhi Ji known as “The Father of the Nation” took an active part in the struggle for Indian Independence against British rule through non violence. Every year on this day a two minute silence is observed to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and other martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of India.
